4 December: Depart Malta (D = Dinner)Meet at Malta International Airport to board our direct flight to Wroclaw. Upon arrival we will checkin at our hotel, and off we go to start our adventure. We will start with a walking tour around Wroclaw to familiarise ourselves with the city. Situated on the banks of the Odra river, Wroclaw boasts postcard panoramas, charming streets and cultural heritage.
Here you will find more bridges that anywhere in central Europe, a beautiful market square, an entire island of awe-inspiring architecture and a one of a kind UNESCO engineering marvel. Following our walking tour we will head for our first dinner together.
5 December: To the mountains (B = Breakfast , D = Dinner)Late in the afternoon we will start our journey to the Polish-Czech border, where we will be residing for the next 5 days. Located in the boundaries of Czech Republic, our SPA hotel is surrounded by a forest in the middle of the country side. In the evenings you will have time to unwind in the sauna, jacuzzi and swimming pool, or relax under the trees.
Before our journey here you have time to explore the city of Wroclaw and should everything go as planned, you can get lost in the Christmas Market, which is known to be one of the best in central Europe.
6 December: Hiking Snezka, highest peak of Czech Republic (B, L, D)After breakfast we will take a transfer to Karpacz and start with a fun cable railway ride to Kopa. Today we will discover the highest parts of Karkonosze Mountains on snowshoes. Snowshoeing is a fantastic way to explore the winter landscape, and it is very easy to get to grips with. Having picked up our snowshoes we start hiking Snezka, the highest peak of Karkonosze and Czech Republic at 1602m. Outstanding scenery awaits all throughout the day. Lunch will be taken at an wonderful spot on route and then we start our descent. Later we visit the 12th century wooden Wang Chapel and we will return to our hotel for dinner.
NB we will snowshoe all throughout the day. Anyone with a normal level of fitness can enjoy the trail as the chosen route is not difficult.
7 December: Cross Country skiing and Horse sledding (B, L, D)Get ready for an exiting day!Today you will learn about the basic skills of cross-country skiing. Of course, this is not something we practice here in Malta, so we will start with an introduction to this sport. We will receive instructions from our leader to ensure that we have a grasp of the basics, and then we will head out for our adventure, gliding across the snow to the Orla shelter where we will have lunch.
After lunch we will enjoy further cross country skiiing activities as a group in a fun environment, and why not try a short race? Later in the afternoon we will go horse sledding and we’ll finish off with a campfire at the end of the day. Today’s route will be chosen depending on the snow conditions to make sure that we experience the best of the area.
8December: Uranium Mine and Quad Bike Adventure (B, L, D)
Early in the morning we take our bus and go to Kowary, to explore the old Uranium Mine, one of the most interesting and beautiful historical site. This mine has a rich history as it was important for the production of the first Russian atomic bombs. In fact, in the years between 1945 and 1947 this was the most important uranium mine of the Soviet Union. The mining activities were top secret at that time and more than 20 tunnels were dug. We will enter the mine, and as we walk along the trail we will learn about the history of mining in the Karkonosze Mountains and about the way in which uranium ore was obtained. We will also witness the biggest exhibition of uranium glass.
We will then head for lunch. The second part of the day is full of adventure; an exciting quad bike ride and a traditional shooting activity await. We will split in two groups.While one group is riding on quad bikes, the other group will have a shooting competition. We will finish off our day with a campfire and dinner under the stars.
9 December: Trekking Karkonsze Mountains (B, L, D)
Today will be spectacular!
We will take a funicular to reach Szrenica at 1362m high, cross the border and start exploring Karkonosze Mountain on foot. The rock debris that makes up the peak is covered with characteristic green and yellow lichens, looking like frost from a distance. Locals had found precious stones here, cattle and sheep were grazed, and a shelter operated and still works today. We will follow a trail through the Elbe Spring and on our descent we will witness the highest and most impressive waterfall in Czech Republic, Pancavsky waterfall, located at the Elbe Valley. It is a typical cascading waterfall with 4 main stages on the side wall of a glacial valley. You will be clicking your camera a real lot today! Dinner will be served at the hotel.
10 December: Sokoliki Trail (B, L)
Leaving behind our base we will head to Sokoliki for a 2 hour walk. We will follow a mountain trail leading to the peak where the views are a feast for the eyes; valleys beneath us and more mountains ahead of us. The trail is an uphill however the path is well preserved and it is easy to reach. We will walk back down and head for lunch. After lunchtime, we will visit a UNESCO heritage site, the beautiful church of Peace in Jawor, a very unique architecture building with a fascinating history. Later, we will take the bus back to the magnificent city of Wroclaw where we have a free evening to visit the Old Town.
11 December: Back home
