Meet at the airport at 12.30pm for Ryanair flight to Perugia departing at 2.40pm. On arrival, transfer to our hotel – Borgo dell’Ulivo, a family run hotel and restaurant located on the green hills that surround the ancient city of Trevi. Check in and time at leisure. The restaurant is well known for offering an exceptional dinner with authentic seasonal products over a 26-course meal.
Saturday 9 April
Breakfast followed by departure to Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis, one of Italy’s patron saints. Explore the main sights through a guided tour, including the famous Basilica of St Francis. Framed by the long undulating hills of Umbria and the forests of Monte Subasio, Assisi is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the world and one of Italy’s most spell-binding gems. Assisi is known as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its plethora of art and historically significant buildings. In the afternoon visit the infamous Marmore Falls, home to the world’s tallest man-made waterfall created by the ancient Romans. The waterfalls are immersed in a natural scenery of incomparable beauty. The surrounding park offers caves, lakes, and guided trails of various difficulty levels. Transfer back to the hotel for dinner.
Sunday 10 April
Start off the day by a guided tour of Gubbio, an ancient town whose origins go back to the height of Umbrian civilization. It remains marvelously well-preserved with many monuments that bear witness to its glorious past. Evidence of its ancient origins is provided by the Eugubine Tablets, one of the most important archeological records in Italy, and the Roman Theater standing just outside the city walls. The monumental Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo, which holds the remains of the town’s patron saint, towers over Gubbio, with its architectural masterpieces that stand as symbols of the power of this medieval city-state. Next stop will be at Perugia, Umbria’s capital city. Lively Perugia offers a range of attractions, from Etruscan–era fortifications and the Rocca Paolina (a medieval fortress and present-day cultural hub) to annual jazz and chocolate festivals. On this guided tour, get a first-hand experience of the city’s charms, see its major sights, and learn about its long history. Our last stop for the day will be at Tili Vini, a winery with fifteen hectares of vineyards set amidst spectacular Umbrian greenery and surrounding mountains. We will have the opportunity to taste 5 selected wines together with some local products. Transfer back to the hotel for dinner.
Monday 11 April
Breakfast and check out, followed by a visit to the Perugina chocolate factory to end our tour on a sweet note. We will see firsthand how the world-famous Perugina chocolate is made. Known for its Baci chocolate kisses, Perugina is an Italian chocolate brand from Perugia. We will learn the secrets behind the making of this ‘divine food’ as we sample some of the company’s best loved creations. Transfer to Perugia Airport for our flight departing at 4.35pm. Land in Malta at 6.05pm.
